Would you stand by and watch a train hurdle towards five people trapped on the tracks, or would you interfere? You see the situation occurring from a distance and find yourself next to a lever that would divert the trolley to another set of tracks. However, the catch is that there is one person on the alternate tracks. The situation boils down to a simple but impactful decision you must make: you could do nothing and allow the trolley to kill five people, or you could pull the lever to divert the trolley to where it will kill one person. What should you do?
This is the famous philosophical debate known as the trolley problem. Since its introduction by English philosopher Phillipa Foot in 1967, this thought experiment has been a popular example of moral psychology Your personality according to what you choose:
We've discussed the dilemma in the club to find out what will people think as we all can see there is no right answer for this problem but if you choose to sacrifice one person you would fall under the category of utilitarianism which think that killing the one person to save the five is usually aligned with (the belief that the best actions are those that result in the greatest good for the greatest number of people but if you choose to save that one you would fall under the category of deontological ethics, which argues that an action is inherently right or wrong regardless of the consequences. This school would favor against taking the action that results in the killing of the individual on the other track.
Since the for scenario creates a new harm, it raises questions like "Why that particular one person? Why is their life worth sacrificing over anyone else's?" and "Why should their life be sacrificed at all--- do they not have a right to live?" In real-life instances of the trolley problem, people need to consider whether they are dealing with a for scenario or an instead scenario and be ready to answer the questions that the scenarios entail. The trolley dilemma represents an everyday choice that many people have to take in a different aspect of our lives but in the end we all know that humans live cannot be quantified or replaced by numbers everyone matters but the choice her is to either change the destiny for the greater good or let the hand of fate take it course.
